Did We Take A Photograph Of A Ghost At The Weekend?

The Burley Ghost 1 CroppedCould it be that this past weekend we took a photograph of a ghost in an old pub?

Debbie and I took a trip out to The New Forest on Saturday, to the village of Burley in the heart of the forest, where we went for a nice walk in one of the heathland parts of the forest, then went to The Queen’s Head Pub for a bite to eat, before browsing the little shops in the village, several of which have a witchcraft theme, the village being linked to a white witch, Cybil Leek who lived in the village in the 1950′s.

I just downloaded the photographs that we took, which include several taken inside The Queen’s Head, that we thought might be useful to add to Debbie’s Squidoo page on Pub Grub.

The curious thing is that I made sure nobody was in the pictures, because Debbie wasn’t too happy about taking pictures inside the pub without asking, and in the first picture there is a woman, however she just doesn’t look right.

I took the photos to capture the chalk boards with the menu specials on, and in the first photo you can clearly see a woman, but the outline of her hair looks like it has erased part of the price of one of the menu items.   Even stranger though is the fact that she isn’t in the second picture, but the price is still showing as if it has been partly erased.

Is this just a coincidence I wonder, or did we capture a ghost on film (well digital media)?

The pub is just one of a number of locations in the New Forest that is supposed to be haunted, which I did not know until I did some research this evening.

If you click on the photos below, they link to the full size originals, but BE WARNED these are 3.5mb each in size, so they might take a while to load.

Try zooming in on the woman, she just looks wrong and sort of ghostly.  Unfortunately I took the photos without flash so they are a bit grainy which doesn’t help.

The Burley Ghost 1 - look how the woman's hair seems to obscure the price on the chalk board.

In the second photo from a slightly different angle the woman has gone, however the chalkboard for the White Chocolate Pistachio Cheesecake still looks as if the shadow of her head is there, and the price has been partly erased, or at least it looks like it.

So what do you think?

Is this a ghost, or just a coincidence.

Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

  1. Very strange. It looks like the corner of the chalkboard covers part of her head/face, while at the same time, her head is covering part of the chalkboard — which I believe is impossible. LOL. I don’t believe in ghosts, because the Bible teaches that no one comes back that way, except in an isolated case where God allowed it. However, I do believe in demons, and believe they will try to steer people from the Truth any way they can. Does that help, Susan, with a different explanation? Probably not. Or, maybe it has something to do with photography and how it works that people can’t understand yet — something like this happened many years ago on a film camera when my uncle took some family pictures.

  2. I would say a ghost, for sure. Especially since you made sure there was noone in the picture before you took it. You know, I never really believed in ghosts, and then we started watching Zac Bagans Ghost Adventures, and now I am pretty confident they exist :) Several weeks ago we went to the Whalehead Club in Corolla, NC. We were upstairs in an empty house, and 3 seconds after I said “it’s nice we are the only ones up here” (its an awesome house from the 1920s and I got a kick out of walking through empty rooms with vintage furniture and clothing without running into crowds of people), something behind me pulled my purse, and the handle on the purse ripped. So I have evidence now… I wish Zac would come out and do a show at Whalehead Club – they have plenty of other ghost stories there.

  3. Wow, strange picture. Actually one of the clearest “ghost” images I’ve ever seen – though part of me has to be a bit skeptical since she is so clear! Has this area ever been investigated for ghosts and has this woman shown up in other photos???

    • I did check with a local ghost hunting society, and also with the pub themselves. Nobody there could recognise the woman, and although clear in the photo, I don’t recall anyone being in the picture, and she just looks unnatural. I guess we will never know. The pub does apparently have a ghost though, but not matching her description, and a white witch did live in the village some 50 years ago.
