Recently there seems to be another spate of people wanting to be my friend on Facebook, a number of them from Africa, mainly Nigeria, and we all know the scams that come out of that country by now, or if not we ought to!

Looking at the profiles of these people, they look pretty innocent, but then you see they have friends who look like attractive women, actually a few I noticed today because their photos were sideways, which nobody would do on purpose, so I assume these were selected from a catalog of downloaded photos, with the user not realizing that they would rotate on upload.

The profile pictures in the photo gallery have lots of people mentioned, even though there is only one person in the picture, and it’s an obvious sign that it’s a fake profile, of which there are many thousands on Facebook unfortunately.

Sadly I have noticed that some of my friends have accepted friend requests from some of these, and the most concerning thing is that if as a Squidoo lensmaster I receive a friend request from someone who is already friends with 20 or more of my friends, I am more likely to just approve them without checking who they are.  That would make 21 friends to the next in line who gets an invitation.

I have no idea if there is a scam, if these people just want to get as many friends as they can, or to acquire contacts that they can spam or scam to later, but I think it’s wise to expect the worst.

Scams usually include phony requests for money, but could include sending viruses via rogue Facebook Apps, which nobody wants, right!

So if you get any Facebook friend requests from people that you don’t know, PLEASE check their profile first and make sure that they are someone that you WANT to have as a friend on Facebook, or be prepared to face the consequences later… and don’t say you haven’t been warned…

Once items have been shared with other members, you can comment on them and rate them. We have some fantastic, side splitting conversations as well as more serious ones too. The more you interact with others on Tagfoot, the more you will gain from it. It’s not just about promoting your own stuff. It’s also about helping out others.

If you like an item that someone has shared, you can opt to give it a Foot-Up, which tells the person who bookmarked it that you like this type of item.  You can also foot comments on items up or down.   The more you bookmark, share, comment on or foot up, the higher your footing.  The Tagfoot home page shows you your rank or footing and it’s fun to rise up the charts as you find more things of interest to comment on.

badge_twitfootTwitter is rapidly becoming the site to be on, with millions of tweets being sent out daily.  There is an interface from Tagfoot to Twitter so that having bookmarked a page, shared a page or footed an item, you can opt to have a notification sent to your Twitter account.  Cool eh…  Add Twitter to your Tagfoot account and you get a shiny Twitfoot badge.

Tagfoot is spam free

There’s no spam on Tagfoot, or at least if someone attempts to spam it’s soon discovered and reported. You decide who to accept on your friends list and if they get too heavy with the shares they send you, you have a variety of options to control what you receive.   Tagfoot has it’s own police force, a select group of elite members called Bigfeet, who constantly monitor postings to ensure that everything is running smoothly and that nobody abuses the system, either by posting spam or illegal material, or by oversharing their posts.  Guess what?  If you achieve the elite status of Bigfoot, you get another shiny badge on your profile.

Here is where usernamecheck.com comes in handy.  I just Stumbled upon this site tonight, checked it out and it’s pretty cool.

Not a lot to it really…   Type your user name (assuming you usually use the same one for most sites that you register with – I think that most of us do), click on Check, and the site will check a whole host of sites to see if your user id is registered or not.

While this is really cool to check where you have registered, the best part for me was finding plenty of sites out there that I not only haven’t registered with, I hadn’t even heard of them.

And so, it looks like I will be busy for a while yet tonight, seeing what some of these “new to me” sites are and if it’s worth my while registering.    If any sites allow posts to be generated by feeds from other sites, you are onto a winner for sure by registering and boosting your presence.
