The Unemployed In The USA Suffer

It’s tough losing your job at any time, but as you get older and your skills maybe are older it gets harder to get another job, harder to retrain, and like so many others you could be in a position where the cost of being unemployed could affect the future of your family, not just yourself.

Take someone like myself, who has been unemployed for just over two weeks.  I have two months of severance pay coming, but with the economy in the state that it is in, chances of finding another job are slim.  Not only that, every time I look for another job, there are fewer positions open for my skills.  Companies don’t want to train you, they want to hire someone who has all the knowledge to do the job required.  So, unless you can gain those new skills, you can’t get one of those positions.

Problem is that this is a Catch-22 situation.  You could take a course and learn something new, but before taking the course you should really know something about the system.  Having taken the course, you need to work with the system to put your learning to use and to fully understand what you learned.  Without a job you can’t do either, and few employers will take on someone who has taken a class and nothing more.  Classes are expensive too!

Unemployment benefit would be enough to pay my rent and for me to scrape by, however I have two young daughters who are in Catholic school because the local middle schools are awful.  Literally the reputation of every single middle and high school in the area is really bad, so the last thing I want to do is to take them out of private school, since that would affect their future.  This is just one example of the way being unemployed affects the whole family.

Health care is another factor.   Most white collar workers get health care provided through the company that they work for, with the company paying 80% of the cost.  However, once you lose your job, your health care is only paid up to the end of the month, and after that you have the option of paying COBRA, basically retaining the same health care plan, but covering the full cost yourself.  With the company I was working for, I would now have to pay 102% of the total cost per month, which would be in excess of $500.  That’s just for ME!  If I had to pay for the whole family, it would be just under $1,000 a month to provide health insurance.

Now isn’t this just crazy?  At the time you really need cheap health care, because you have no money coming in, you have to either pay more than the total unemployment benefit ofr the month, or go without any medical coverage at all.  Doesn’t this seem just backwards?

In the UK at least there is the National Health Service (known as the NHS), which is funded through National Insurance payments (the equivalent of Social Security).  Health care (apart from Dental Care) is completely FREE, so you can go see a doctor, get surgery etc, without having to pay a penny.   Of course this does come at a price, since the NHS is under funded, and so if you need treatment and it’s not deemed to be urgent, you could be on the waiting list for a year before anything is done, but at least it’s FREE.   Many companies in the UK do offer a subsidised health care plan similar to the USA (BUPA), but when you need to fall back in hard times, the NHS is there at least.

This past two weeks I have had to catch up on all the things that I did not do while I was employer, getting my eyesight checked, a full checkup, and having a dental checkup too.

Although my vision exam was free and covered by my medical plan, there was a deductible and of course they only pay so much towards frames, so that set me back over $100 for a pair of glasses (my first – not bad to get to 54 without having glasses, although I did really need these 5 years ago!).

Then the doctor.  My exam was free, but other things I would have liked to get done would have cost, so I had to fore-go those.

Finally the dentist.  Well my exam was free, however my dental plan only pays 80% of the cost of fillings, and only 50% of the cost of crowns, so again having to get a tooth I broke two years ago crowned cost me close to $400.   Then I had a cleaning, which is supposed to be covered but not fully.  The hygienist  found two pockets of decay, and recommended I have this antibiotic injected to help treat them.  Of course the dental insurance doesn’t cover this (surprise), so there I am for the cleaning and treatment another $180 out of pocket.    I get home and look up information about the product, Arestin, and find all over the Internet articles where dentist have recommended this unnecessarily just to get extra money, and supposedly the effect it has is possibly not worth the money.  Oh great!  I could have saved myself $150 of what I have left to help see me through until I can earn again.

Well one thing you have to do when you are unemployed is to tighten your belt and to budget hard to make the money last.  I have been doing this for a while now as it is, and this I think I will leave to another article.

So what is your opinion of the health care industry in the USA?  I know President Obama is trying to change things, but I would be interested to know your opinion on what should and could be done, and also I would be interested to hear about your experiences with the health care industry.

Thirteen Days And Counting

It’s now thirteen days since I lost my job and I have been incredibly busy ever since, trying to organise my life and to promote my work more online.

Since my health insurance runs out in less than a week I have been trying to get the essentials sorted out while I can, since I can’t afford insurance without having a full time job.

Last week I went to the Dentist and Doctor, entered the time for today’s Dental appointment into my Google Calendar for 9:30am.  Went there, signed in, sat for 5 minutes reading a magazine, and they called me up to the counter.  “Anthony, your appointment isn’t until 1pm”.   Boy did I feel stupid, but I have so many different threads running through my head all the time, it’s hard to get it all right.

So having mis-timed that, I went to the hardware store to get a couple of things, then to the Farmers Market to do some shopping, as the fruit and vegetables there are usually better and cheaper than going to the grocery store.    While I was there Debbie called, and FINALLY she had got her visa approved for travel to the USA.  So now after 4 months of waiting she will be able ot travel here again.  Of course now I might not have the money for flights… Life just keeps throwing us those curveballs…  I won’t say any more, because I know Debbie will want to add things in her own words tomorrow.

Went back to the dentist at 1pm, had a tooth drilled down and impressions fitted for a crown.  I think he spent a good hour drilling and filing.  My jaw was starting to ache, and as always when I go to the dentist, I drool!  No idea why, but my mouth just fills with saliva when I have dental work done, and if they don’t watch out it just runs everywhere.   Well finally they got my impression for the final crown done, and also a temporary one made and fitted.  I can still taste it though, usually takes days for the taste to go away.

The afternoon was pretty much shot by the time I got home, so I chatted with Debbie on the webcam for a while, then after she went to bed I made a good stir fry with some green onions, boc choy, spices, ginger soy sauce, and egg fried brown rice.  Not my best effort, but pretty healthy at least.  I love to cook and have rarely had the chance in the past, but now with the weather being a bit cooler I am enjoying cooking lots of veggies.  I can’t justify the cost of meat, so that is a real treat for me, but I was always brought up to eat plenty of vegetables and these days I can easily make a meal of them, cooking them in plenty of different combinations and ways, often pretty spicy.

This evening I have been working solidly on blogs, updating my links on Stumbleupon, adding a new page for Tiger Direct Special Offers to my Poddys web site and adding it to the Sidebar here as well.  Tiger Direct have always had good prices in my opinion, and I have shopped there a lot in the past.

Initially I thought that there was nothing on television tonight, and after half heartedly watching an episode of Stargate SG-1 and then a Star Trek Next Generation episode, I looked at the guide and saw that on the Palladia channel (part of MTV) there was a 2007 concert with Heart performing Dreamboat Annie and more.  This was good, I saw them in 2007 on the tour, and they closed with Love Reign Over Me from The Who‘s album Quadrophenia, one of my all time favourites.   That was followed by Genesis in Rome from their 2008 tour which was an amazing concert.   I only saw them once, and they were my favourite band from the time I first heard Foxtrot back in 1972.  I saw them at Wembley Stadium in 1987 and they were incredible.  Even now it’s the best concert I have been to.

So I am caught up on Stumbleupon, most of my email, added all my lenses to a new directory today, but still have so much to do.

Oh yes, before I forget, I updated several of my lenses as well…

I added a new video to my Religious Jokes lens.  This is a stand up routine by Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder, Mr, Bean) welcoming new arrivals to Hell.  It’s very funny especially if you like Rowan Atkinson, don’t miss it.

I then added two new videos to my Zecharia Sitchin lens about the Annunaki.  If you haven’t heard of him or the Annunaki I think you might find his theories quite amazing.  They involve the deepest history, going back beyond the great flood and to the creation of mankind.  It’s quite an eye opener if you haven’t explored this topic before.  I added a video clip below to give a brief introduction to what his books are about, and he has written a number of excellent works on this subject.   Thought to be a crackpot thirty years ago, more and more is coming to light about our most ancient past, and pieces are gradually falling into place.

Well time for me to head to bed, as a Tom Petty concert takes place on television now.  Yes I like him, but I am tired and I have seen it before.

Hopefully in the morning I will have some good news about work or something  else.  You never know, we had good news today with Debbie’s visa being approved.  Now we just need to get me a windfall and/or a job or a chance to earn some good money.

For All My Unemployed Friends

My cry for help since I lost my job 11 days ago has gone out far and wide, and it’s so sad to hear of so many good people who have also lost their jobs.  Not only am I hearing from people that I have networked with over the last year who have lost their jobs, but they have spouses and other family members who have lost their jobs too.   It’s very sad, and these are very difficult times indeed.  I know that this is going to get worse for many before it gets better, but hopefully this post can help if only in a small way.

If you have lost your job, or know someone who has lost theirs, or maybe you know of someone who is looking for an expert in one field or another.  Maybe you know of a company or web site that is good for people searching for employment, or for retraining, earning money online (no scams) etc.

Please, if you need help, or can offer help, or just wish to tell your story to others, post a comment on this message.

Hopefully this simple effort might help connect someone in need with someone who can help.

If I can help even one person, then that’s a start.

So feel free to comment, tell us your story, or let others know how they might be able to seek help.

It doesn’t matter if you are in the  USA, UK or wherever.  Please feel free to post a comment.

Good Luck to everyone in keeping their jobs or finding a good source of income.

One Week Later

frustration out of workWell it’s one week today since I lost my job, and I have been really busy during this time, trying to get so many things sorted out, but not making even half the progress that I would have liked to.

I have a number of priorities for tasks, but so much needs to be attended to immediately and I would prefer it not to wait.

The obvious first task for me was to try to find work, so I updated my resume, posted that to several main job seeker sites that worked for me before, contacted the headhunter who got me my last two jobs, and since last weekend was a holiday weekend, I decided to wait for things to happen and to move on.

A company I worked for three years ago may need some work doing, and there are still people there that I know, so realistically this is my best hope in the short term.  I have an appointment to call the IT manager on Friday, so wish me luck.

My second priority is to get my health taken care of, since I only have insurance until the end of this month.

I desperately need eyeglasses, have done for a good five years, but never took the time to investigate.  Now when there isn’t enough light I struggle to see the computer (let alone what is on the screen – just kidding) so it’s impacting my attempts to work on my web sites and blogs.   I made an appointment yesterday, and the optician said that my eyes were good, the only problem being  my inability to see things clearly close up.  I rarely look good with glasses on, but the pair I chose seem to look ok, they just make me look a bit more serious.

Next is to get registered with a doctor, so I can have a full checkup.  I think it’s been ten years since my last one, and hopefully there is nothing wrong.  By the time you hit your fifties, things start to wear out, but I try to eat well, to exercise more than I have in years, and most of the time I feel pretty good.

The third thing I need to do is to register with a dentist.  I know I need at least two fillings, and I lost the inside of a tooth over two years ago (to a Tootsie Roll that I pinched from my daughter’s Halloween candy bag – serves me right!) so I really need to get a checkup, cleaning, and to sort out what I can.

Having got this out of the way, I need to work on creating a couple of new web sites, updating existing ones, writing more articles, promoting the lot, catching up on my email, comments from Squidoo, correspondence from Stumbleupon and other blogs etc etc.

Then of course it is Tax Season here in the USA and I need to get my tax return completed and sent in.

So while I may be unemployed, I have been really busy the past week.

In addition, rather than spend my whole day inside, getting a sore back and eyes, I have tried to go out twice a day if I can to the pool.  It’s a nice pool, rarely crowded, and if I can do 20 or more lengths at least once a day that’s good exercise, builds up my arms and helps to flatten my stomach (and it needs it too!).    I have also taken the occasional steam, and almost every night the guy I rent with and I walk around the lake here or the golf course, usually doing between 3-5 miles.  It’s nice and quiet, away from the bright lights, the stars are clear, and it helps clear the head, as well as being good exercise.

Well wish me luck please.  If you would like to keep informed as to how things are progressing, please feel free to subscribe to the blog.

Also if you could, any promotion of this blog would be appreciated, whether to Digg, Stumbleupon, or any other site.   Every bit counts…  I did register us with CommentLuv so if you comment on anything here, it will get seen on other blogs that are registered too.

Thanks so much to all of you who have sent good vibes and advice my way.  I really do appreciate it.  At times like this it’s good to know that you have friends.

How Secure Is Your Job In 2009?

I came across an article on Open Salon today by Steve Klingaman entitled Status Symbol for 2009: A Secure Job.

Having commented on this at length, I thought that my comments, together with the topic would make a good blog posting.   The economy is in such a mess, so many companies are struggling to stay afloat, and if like me you have a full time job, no doubt you have worries and concerns over what may happen in 2009.

Personally, I think 2009 is going to be a tough year for many people – too many people, and definitely having a secure job is a new status symbol.

But defining secure?  I don’t think you can.

My job got eliminated 5 years ago.  I was working for a musical instrument manufacturer in Indiana, got called into the boss’s office in the middle of a Friday morning, “Sorry to say your job has been eliminated”…   I thought I was secure, being the most acquainted person with the main accounting system.  But no – bang went my job along with 27 others, all either people who had been with the company the longest or those who were earning more.  I learned a hard lesson that day.  Now I never feel safe.

Right now the company I work for, which is a multi-billion dollar corporation, has made a lot of cut backs.  No pay rises, no perks of any description, no employer 401k matching, and some management had apparently taken pay cuts.  They haven’t said whether our usual annual bonus will be eliminated or not, but I’m not banking on anything.   Of course any action that they take to avoid cutting jobs is good, but there is always the worry that the economy will not recover in time to save us all.

Now this company I work for manufactures household appliances.  You know, toasters, microwaves, blenders, fans etc.   With sales being hit this year, the company has been forced by the big stores (Walmart, target etc) to cut their margins, and if you have been to any large store in the USA in the last few months you have to have seen the amount of consumer goods that are being dumped out at crazy prices.

It’s not just appliances.  Take a look in any store and see all the televisions, computers etc that are being offered at amazing discounts.   They just want sales, to keep their inventory turning over.

My fear is that in keeping sales up by dropping prices, many people have now purchased new items, which will last for years.  having bought a new television, toaster, fridge etc for a low low price, how many years is it going to be before these people need a replacement?

In 6 months therefore, are many companies who cut their margins to the lowest levels possible in order to maintain sales levels, going to see sales dry up as their customer base has already acquired the items that they need, often ahead of time because of the cut in prices?

Either the marketing plans that these companies have is based on some solid long term plan unknown to me, or before the end of the year we will see major problems in both the retail stores and the manufacturers that supply them.

I hope this doesn’t happen, but it really does scare me.

My fall back plan ideally would be to work for myself and to eek out a living on the internet, between blogging and earning income from affiliate programs, but obtaining the knowledge to do that is not easy.  I have been trying for more than 10 years (on and off) and still haven’t acquired the necessary skills.   Maybe 2009 is the year when I have to quit procrastinating and start seriously looking at finding alternative forms of income, just for my own security.

So what are your plans for 2009?  Are you actively looking to supplement your income, already self-employed and living off the Internet, or are you just keeping your fingers crossed that nothing bad happens with your employment status this year?
