News From A Weird World : The Offbeat News 16 March 2011

In this edition of News From A Weird World, how well do the British know their meat, a girl who is smarter than Einstein, blowing it on chocolate, doing what in a chocolate shop, a two headed turtle, Australian UFO conference and more.

This article was previously published on the Yahoo Contributor Network..

News From A Weird World (previously known as Offbeat News) is a selection of bizarre stories, strange stories, odd stories and weird news stories from the past week, that have been cleverly extracted by scouring news sites from around the world.

The stories to be found on News From A Weird World are the kind that are just so bizarre, they make you realize that fact is often stranger than fiction, and make you wonder what on earth people were thinking to get into the news in this way.

This is a selection of weird news stories from the past week that I hope you enjoy, and if you do, please can you help spread the word by sharing the stories with your friends.

How Many British Just Don’t Know Their Meat

A new survey was taken in the UK as part of the National Butcher’s Week meat promotion, and the findings are rather sad, as well as being a little disturbing.

When it comes to cuts of meat and their origins, it seems the British no longer have much of a clue, since so many depend on ready meals and take-out food these days.

When asked if you could buy a pork wing, 17% of those surveyed believed that you actually could.

It gets worse though, with more than 20% believing that you could buy chicken chops and lamb drumsticks, and 10% had even asked a butcher for a leg of liver.  (Personally I think that’s pretty offal!)

20% of those surveyed thought that tofu was a kind of meat (disturbing if you are a vegetarian), and 5% thought that traditional British dishes such as haggis, faggots, game pie and oxtail contained no meat at all.

One of the problems is that the supermarkets have forced many traditional butchers shops to close down, and even when there is still a local butcher, the supermarket prices are often cheaper, causing many to shop there instead.

Well I’m off now to get some Hot Pork Wings and some Curly Fries (made from pigs tails I presume).

Brighter Than Einstein And Only 11 Years Old!

Victoria Cowie is a bright young girl who comes from Wolverhampton in the Midlands of England.

It’s her IQ of 162 that has put her in the news this week, since that is 2 points more than the renowned physicist Albert Einstein, and she is one of the brightest people in Mensa at just 11 years old.

Victoria is an only child and is far from being “odd” like so many very bright people.

She loves animals, drama and music, and enjoys playing soccer, according to her Mom.

As for when she grows up, Victoria would like to be a veterinarian.

I wonder how the next few years will pan out and where life will take her.  Victoria could be one to follow in years to come.

Well That’s One Way To Blow Your Inheritance

When her Mother passed away 4 years ago at the age of 73 and left her £10,000 ($15,000) as an inheritance, 45 year old Mary Tetley from Denbigh in North Wales knew exactly what to do with it.

You see Mary is a chocolate lover, so much so in fact that she booked a 3 month vacation, touring the finest chocolate factories in Europe.

During the trip, which took Mary around France, Belgium and Switzerland, she ate the finest chocolate based products every day, and came home 28lbs heavier than when she left.

Since the return, aided by her husband Mark, Mary has seen the second part of her dream become a reality, as they have opened their own chocolate shop.

I just hope that she doesn’t eat all the inventory.

He Did What In A Chocolate Shop?

Well here we go from reading about a sweet lady indulging in her dream of owning a chocolate shop, to another one from Sweden that also involves a chocolate shop, but isn’t quite in the same vein.

A 45 year old man was out shopping in the city of Finspang in Sweden, when he got the urge to go – you know what I mean.

Since staff at the shop that he was in, which happened to sell chocolate by the way, refused to allow him to use their restrooms, because of strict health regulations, the man decided to just go, there and then.

Sure, he could have left the shop and found a public convenience, like most people (well like all people you would hope), but no, he just let his anger get the better of him, pulled down his pants, squatted and pooped on the floor, shouting abuse at the girl on the cash register as he did so.

He then ran off, but not before grabbing a chocolate bar, and leaving behind a pair of soiled underwear.

The man, aged 45, has since been sentenced to 8 months in prison, charged with shoplifting, assault and molestation.   Apparently he had previously shouted abuse at the cashier on several other occasions.

It’s not exactly what you want to find happening in a store that sells food items is it.  I wonder if they had to destroy all food items that weren’t properly wrapped.

The original article does actually have an artist’s impression of the offending poo.  I wonder how many of you reading this are just sick enough to go take a look.

That’s Rare : A Two Headed Turtle With Five Feet

Well from one story of a turtle head poking out (reference to Austin Powers) to a different sort of turtle head poking out.

An African Spurred Tortoise that hatched 7 weeks ago in the town of Zilina in Northern Slovakia is creating quite a stir.

The turtle is truly one of a kind, having 2 heads and 5 feet.

The owner has called the turtle “Magdalena”, where “Magda” and “Lena” are the names that he gave to the two heads.

It’s fortunate for the turtle that it was born in captivity, since with 2 heads and the fifth foot sticking out between them, it can’t retract fully inside it’s shell, and therefore would be unlikely to survive in the wild.

Although the turtle fits into the palm of a hand right now, a fully grown African Spurred Tortoise can grow to 90cm or 36 inches.

If Magdalena does reach that size, she could indeed be like a two headed monster of storybook fame.

Australian UFO Conference Cancelled Due To The Weather

Attendees at the first UFO conference that was to be held at a campground in a remote area of the Northern Territory in Australia were hoping for a treat, but the surprise that they actually got was something the organizers had not planned for.

The organizers had to call off the event, because heavy rain left 95 percent of the property under water, including the whole of the campground, and 24 rooms and cabins.

Since one of the speakers had already arrived, as well as the band and a few attendees, the speaker did go ahead, but it does sound as if this event was a bit of a washout.

Woman Boards School Bus And Slaps Child

If you read News From A Weird World regularly, you will know that I pick on people from Florida occasionally.  Ok, so I pick on them rather a lot, and this week with time short and knowing that the Florida news is a good source of stories, we are going to start off in Pompano Beach in Southeast Florida.

Before anyone protests too much, I used to live in South Florida, and yes for 2 months in Pompano Beach myself, but I never got arrested or made the news once.

This woman did, however, after a surveillance camera on a school bus showed her boarding the bus on 23rd February, and giving a 7 year old boy a good slap.   The woman claimed that the boy had hit her 6 year old daughter (watch the video HERE).

The video shows the woman boarding the bus, despite the driver’s attempts to stop her, then going up to the boy, and then forcibly giving him a good back-hander, telling him “don’t you put your hands on my child”.

The woman then looks up at the camera and says “I don’t give a ****”.

The woman, aged 27, is now in custody, and at the time of the offense was on probation for driving with a suspended license.

It seems that no matter what attempts are made to make travel on school buses safer, someone always finds a way to worry anxious parents.

Mom Fights With Kids Over A Perm

You may have heard me mention St. Lucie County in Florida before, because it has a reputation for being the center of a lot of strange news stories.

This one from Fort Pierce in the very same county is no exception.

A mother was discussing with her teenage daughter as to whether she should get a perm or not.   This turned from a discussion into a heated argument, and ended up with the mother chasing the girl and her older sister with a kitchen knife in her hand.

The younger daughter, aged 17, was arguing with her mother over whether she should have a perm or not, according to the older sister, aged 23.

The mother wanted her daughter to have a perm, but the girl didn’t want one.  When both daughters tried to leave the house, the mother grabbed a knife and chased them as they ran out of the house and towards the older sister’s car.

The mother then picked up a block of concrete, and threw it at the car, breaking the windshield.

She was placed under arrest and is on charges of aggravated assault and criminal mischief.

Group Leader Tapes Boy To Chair And Turns Him Upside Down

I tell you, who would want to be a kid growing up in these parts of Florida!

Let’s move just south from St. Lucie County to Titusville on the Space Coast, which also has it’s share of odd stories.

This one concerns a 21 year old man who was working as a group leader in an after school program.

Having got fed up with a boy who was causing trouble in his group, he is claimed to have taped him to a chair, then turned him upside down, as a means of trying to make him stop disrupting the group.

The man is also accused of putting the boy into a trash can, pushing him in so firmly that he was unable to get out.

Mind you, I bet a good many teachers have wished that they could get away with something like this when they have had really unruly children in their class.

 .

When Is It Not Right To Be Appointed The Designated Driver?

Well the red light just lit up in St. Lucie County yet again, so back we go a few miles further north of Titusville to Port St. Lucie, where a woman has been charged with child abuse and allowing an unauthorized minor to drive.

It seems that the, aged 10, was being given driving lessons when she crashed into 3 vehicles and a house.

Police found a 39 year old man in the front passenger seat, whose hand was covered in blood, and who claimed to have had 2 beers.

The girl’s mother, aged 33, was in the back seat of the car, also drunk, and in possession of marijuana, and also in the car was the girl’s 8 year old brother.

The woman is going to jail for 18 months, and the man was sentenced to 13 months in prison followed by 11 months on probation.  He was previously charged with child abuse in January.

To me the most frustrating thing about all these news stories is that these people are allowed to breed.  What do you think?

How Do You Sabotage An Election In Nigeria?

An opposition party in Nigeria is accusing their rivals of sabotaging their campaigning, by blocking the runway where their candidate was due to land to attend a local election meeting.

The runway was blocked by a herd of rams and goats, which caused the plane carrying the presidential candidate to make an emergency landing, which damaged the plane.

Elections in Nigeria are usually affected by corruption and sabotage attempts, but this is the first time apparently that animals have been used to disrupt election campaigning.

At Last A Happier Story Out Of Christchurch, New Zealand

A quick trip to the other side of the world before we end this week’s News From A Weird World, and this time to Christchurch in New Zealand, site of the horrendous earthquake in February.

The earthquake caused a giant rock to crash through the walls of a house in Christchurch on 22nd February, and it ended up coming to rest in the hallway.

The owner of the house, Phil Johnson,  put the bolder up for sale on an internet auction site, listing it as follows:

For sale, 1 owner, 25-30 tonne landscape feature (answers to the name Rocky).

He is in pristine condition (just a little bit of concrete dust). Suitable for garden feature, or as in our case, a magnificent addition to your living area… Rocky will enhance your ‘indoor-outdoor’ flow considerably.

The owner was pleasantly surprised to find that the bids for “Rocky” came to NZ$60,000 (US$44,000), the sum of which is being donated to a charity to help victims of the disaster.

 Mr. Johnson, “You Rock!”

I’m Stuck In A Jam Show Me The Way To Go Home

Over 2,000 truck drivers in Indonesia have been caught up in an 11km (8 mile) traffic jam, trying to get to the ferry port at Merak in Java, so that they can cross to the port of Bakauheni in Sumatra.

It’s only an 8 mile traffic jam you might think, but the government has failed to do anything about the consistently long delays in getting to the port, and some drivers have now been queuing up for OVER A WEEK!

Of the 30 ferries that operate on this busy route, 8 are currently undergoing repairs, while at the same time there was a jump of between 10 and 17 percent in the volume of truck traffic in January, because of more construction projects in Sumatra.

Some of the drivers have been forced to sell personal items to pay for food, while others have had their wallets and other items stolen while they were sleeping.

I think I will give Indonesia a miss for now.  I can’t imagine spending half my vacation waiting for a ferry.

No More Sex And Drugs Parties For This Orlando Doctor

A doctor who worked at a medical practice in Orlando in Florida was leading a double life, as investigators from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) found out when they checked up on him last September.

The 55 year old doctor, who originates from Zagreb in Croatia, was found to be enticing women to nightly parties at his home, where prescription drugs and cocaine were freely availably to them in return for sexual favors.

The raid followed a tip off from a woman who said that she had developed an addiction to Oxycodone after the doctor prescribed this to her without properly explaining it’s effects.   Following her third visit to the doctor, he invited her to one of his parties.

When searching the doctor’s home, investigators found 1,475 oxycodone tablets, 290 which were suspected to be alprazolam, 10 grams of cocaine, 5 handguns, and over $37,000 in cash.

Evidence of the parties and their sexual nature were also collected, including photographs, videos and text messages.

The doctor is now under arrest on a variety of charges, and his requests to have the amount of his bail reduced have been denied.

The good news is that another evil predator is off the streets of Florida, hopefully for a long time.

Dogs Sniffing Butts Can Sometimes Reap Rewards

When I was living in Florida I kept hearing things about the inhabitants of St. Lucie County, and judging by the news stories that come out of there, they were right.

This incident began when a deputy saw a man riding a bicycle in the middle of the road about 5pm, causing a traffic obstruction.

When the deputy approached him, the man became very loud, and also nervous when the deputy attempted to pay him down near his waistline.

The deputy thought he could feel something in the man’s rear, and a sniffer dog was sent for.

The dog soon caught wind (so to speak) of  a narcotic smell coming from the man’s buttocks, and the deputy removed a tube which had been inserted there, and which contained 12 rocks of crack cocaine.   They also found $145 in cash in the man’s possession.

Needless to say, the man was arrested on drugs related charges and sent to jail.

Shame they couldn’t also arrest him for being a pain in the ass!

Guess Who Got Arrested For Driving Under The Influence?

Despite numerous attempts by the government, police, charities and other local organizations to clamp down on drink driving, people still do it, and they still get caught and have their licenses suspended.

When the Gainesville police department in Florida pulled over a 48 year old woman on 18th February, they were shocked when they learned who she was.

The woman was in fact none other than the former president of the Gainesville chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), which is now no longer active.

She confessed to having had 4 beers and was found to be 3 times over the legal limit.

Boy Underwent Surgery Went To Heaven And Met His Dead Sister

Believe in what you will, this is a rather unusual story, and just adds more fuel to the belief that there is life after death, unless you are a complete skeptic.

While the Burpo family from Nebraska were on vacation in Colorado, their four year old son was taken ill, and mis-diagnosed with flu.

By the time they returned home it became apparent that he was seriously ill, and underwent emergency surgery twice for a ruptured appendix.

The miracle came when the boy recovered, and told his parents about having met his sister.  His mother had miscarried the year before the boy was born, and had never told him about his lost sibling, but the boy said that the girl looked familiar, and that she was pleased to have someone from her family “up there”.

The boy also said that his sister had given him hugs, and how he had looked down and seen his parents praying.

He also claimed to have seen his grandfather, who had passed away more than 30 years earlier, but on being shown a photo of him that was taken shortly before his death, he didn’t recognize him.  He did recognize him however from a photo that was taken when he was a young man.

The boy saw more things and even sat on Jesus’s lap, should you care to read the full story.

So what do you believe?  Is everything as the boy said, or was it just a strange dream?

I’m not sure how I perceive Heaven to be, or whether there is such a place, but I do believe that part of us does live on after death.  Exactly how and where though, I have no idea.
