Pictures Of England Needs A Helping Hand

Pictures Of England is a unique web site that has thousands of images from the British Isles that have been sent in by members, and also hundreds of articles about people and places in England that have been written by members.  Pictures of England provides a wonderful insight into the places and events that throughout the ages have made Britain great.

Unfortunately, the cost of running the web site, the servers and hosting costs, have been increasing dramatically as membership and traffic has soared, and the owners, Chris and Sarah Plows are faced with having to close the site down in the next couple of months unless additional funding can be found.

They have implemented a Premium Membership option, as well as donations via Paypal, and hopefully this will help to bring in enough money to enable them to save the site.

This is a copy of the message that they sent out to members of Pictures Of England this week:

Dear Member,

This is an important message to all members.

Unfortunately Sarah and I are no longer in a position where we can continue the funding of the PicturesOfEngland.com website ourselves, and without the urgent help of our members will soon be forced to close the site down during the coming weeks (as soon as July 2011). This is due to the large server costs which runs into thousands of pounds and are set to increase further as the site attracts more members and visitors, and the cost of running the site continues to rise.

We are therefore, in a bid to try and turn things around as quickly as possible, introducing a paid ‘Premier Membership‘ option which we hope as many of you as possible will join in a concerted effort to help us survive the short term and hopefully secure the long term future of the site as well. Other big image sites do a two-tier membership to great success, and although they may have been built on the back of large corporations and we are just a husband and wife team, we see no reason we can’t do it too, if enough members truly value the site.

Therefore please consider making a donation in order to keep the Pictures of England website online and help secure its future. Thank you in advance for your much needed support.

Thumbs UpI know that not everyone who reads this message will be able to make a donation to Pictures Of England, but if you like this site and see what a valuable resource it is, please can you help by sharing this message and/or a link to the site with your friends and to give it a  Thumbs Up on the social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon, Digg etc).

Thanks in advance for helping to keep a valuable resource alive.

I have no connection with Pictures Of England other than as someone who sees the value that the site provides, and wishes to see it kept alive.

Article Summary 9th August 2010

This is a list of articles that I have written on Associated Content in the last week, I hope you will take a look at them and also enjoy them.

I write on a number of topics, usually it depends on what comes into my head on any given day, so it could be a travel story, memoirs from my life, something from the daily news, or even a poem inspired by something.

This is what I have published in the last week, enjoy:

  • While Chelsea Clinton’s wedding ceremony was an immensely lavish event, is it right for a member of the US Government to be seen splashing out this kind of money when the US Economy is struggling.
  • In part II of our walk along the River Hamble in Hampshire from Swanwick to Warsash, we see some houseboats and the salt marshes at low tide.
  • When a soldier’s Rosary beads fell on the ground he saw that he was standing on a land mine and that saved his life. His grandfather’s life was also miraculously saved by Rosary beads in World War II.
  • This is an independent look at what the celebrity gossip press has been reporting in the USA over the last week, as seen from a British Point Of View, featuring Lindsay Lohan off to Rehab, Jessica Alba returning home, and Britney Spears going braless.
  • In part III of our walk along the Hamble River from Swanwick to Warsash, we came across this field of really cute Donkeys.
  • This week on Offbeat News, a 12 year old girl fights off an intruder, a giant wasp nest in a pub, flying without make-up, swimming with ducks, a lawnmower race cut short, a Miss Chubby contest, and WWJD prevents store robbery.
  • Having waved goodbye to the donkeys (see part III of our walk), we continue on the path that leads along the Hamble River from Swanwick to Warsash.
  • The National Archives have released wartime documents that show Winston Churchill was involved in keeping UFO sightings secret to prevent mass panic.
  • As we approach the village of Warsash, we pass some big houses, and see visitors in one of the gardens. We also find unusual pink ferry boats.
  • Emma Watson best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies has adopted a short sixties style hairstyle giving her a stunning Mia Farrow look (link to pictures).
  • Having reached Warsash, we stopped for a drink in The Rising Sun pub, then looked at the memorial plaques for the Commandos who left here on 5th June 1944 on their epic journey to the Normandy Beaches.
  • On our walk back to Swanwick from Warsash the tide has come in, and the view of the salt marshes and boats is quite different as you will see. Also several more houses to make you drool.
  • This lone Swan came swimming up to us shortly before the end of our walk along the Hamble River from Swanwick to Warsash. I think he just wanted to get his photograph taken.

Images From Life

Pohtography by Tony Payne - Images From Life on Redbubble

I love to travel and I also love to take photographs of places that I have been to.

Not only do these photographs act as great memories for me, once in a while I manage to take what I think is a real gem, and it’s nice to have a great site like Red Bubble where I can share some of my works with the rest of the world.

I hope you enjoy my photographs, and if you do, please consider buying something from the collection, or sharing the gallery with your friends.
