T Is For Today

T is a letter of the alphabet that pretty much anyone ought to be able to find something to write about.   After all, there are plenty of words that begin with the letter T, like Today and Tomorrow for example.

It’s not like the letters Q or Z which give you only limited opportunities to write about something that is different to the other thousands of people who are trying to come up with a post that is about a specific letter of the alphabet.

T however does present it’s own problems, in that there is so much choice for topic.  But I still don’t want to write about the same thing as a lot of other people, and Today I want to be different, so Tenaciously (is that the right word?) I am going to see where This leads me…

I was going to write about the Titanic, since it sailed from Southampton where we live, and on the 16th April, which was the 99th anniversary of the sinking, we went on an organized walk in the Old Cemetery in Southamtpon which is where some of the survivors were buried (after they died of course) and where there are memorials to those who perished as well as people who aided the families that were left without a breadwinner.

But since I want to create a lens on Squidoo about this and to use some of the photographs that I took, I thought to write about something else instead.

I then thought about Tubular Bells, the unique concept album from the early 1970′s that brought the name Mike Oldfield to everyone’s attention, and that helped to make Richard Branson’s Virgin Records a mega success.

But I thought that this might require a little research, and might be better left for an interesting article for another day.

Try as I might Though, it has been hard to find a Topic for Today.

Since it’s getting late and This post is already getting quite long, I might leave it at That and see what I can write about Tomorrow.

I write on a number of topics, usually it depends on what comes into my head on any given day, so it could be a travel story, memoirs from my life, something from the daily news, or even a poem inspired by something.

I hope you will take a look at them and also enjoy them.

The Sinking of the Titanic is Now Set to Become a Mini Series

First we had one of the most spectacular movies of all time, Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Now in time for the 100th anniversary of the sinking, Titanic is to become a 4 part mini-series written by Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey.

Southampton Old Cemetery

The Old Cemetery in Southampton is one of the oldest municipal cemeteries in England, and is located on the edge  of The Common in Southampton, Hampshire on the South Coast of England.

The cemetery was created in 1843 with the first burial taking place in 1846, and over the years it has been extended and is comprised of various parts with a number of chapels.

The cemetery covers a total of 27 acres and over 116,000 burials took place there between the years of 1846 and 2005.

The cemetery is in some ways a historical record of the City Of Southampton, having a number of graves associated with the Titanic, which sailed from Southampton and many of the crew came from there.  There are also a number of graves related to other maritime incidents, as well as graves related to the  Battle of Waterloo, Charge of the Light Brigade, the Indian Mutiny and the Boer War.

Sadly the cemetery is rarely used these days for burials, and much of it has not been looked after for some years.  Although parts have been looked after and restored by the Friends Of Southampton Old Cemetery, much of the cemetery is currently in a sad state, as the photographs in the linked slide documents show.

These photographs were taken in the summer of 2009 and show the poor status of some of the gravestones in parts of the cemetery.  Although in a sad state, the cemetery does provide a good opportunity for the photographer to capture rare images of gravestones and memorials that have seen better days.

I hope you will take some time to enjoy the wonderful photographs collection on the links below.

Another Batch Of Fresh Lenses

Both Debbie and I have been busy this last couple of weeks creating new lenses on Squidoo.

While Debhie has been working on her collection of lenses about Hampshire, I have been working on my USA States lenses, and also a local one about my daily walks.

Firstly, Debbie created a lens about Southampton, the city where she lives.  Southampton is one of the largest ports in England, in the middle of the South Coast, and has seen many famous ships sail down the river, including The Titanic, Queen Mary and Elizabeth, and also their successors the QE2 and QM2.

She just completed another about Netley, a suburb of Southampton which has a lot of history.  Netley has ruins of an Abbey, as well as an old military hospital, the remains of which have been turned into a country park.

Meanwhile, I just completed a lens about the morning walks that I take where I live in Deer Creek in South Florida.  The lens has over 80 photographs from the walk, including some nice homes, lakes, and much of the tropical foliage and wildlife of the area.

I have also been working on a set of lenses about the states in the USA.  I am creating these in alphabetical order, and so far have completed Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas and California.   Each lens has background information on each state, and a list of other lenses about that state.  If you have a Squidoo lens about any of these states, please feel free to add it to the list of lenses to get some free promotion.

If I haven’t got to your state yet, why not subscribe to our blog so you can be kept up to date with progress.  I hope you enjoy what you see here.
